Centrifugal Pumps Need And Working Explained

Industrial centrifugal pumps are most commonly used pumps for transferring fluids. The movement of fluids done with the help of a rotating impeller creating a centrifugal force. The centrifugal pumps are used in diverse industries like agriculture, municipal, power generation plants, petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical and many more. The ability to handle huge quantities of fluid, high flow rates and possibility of adjustment of flow rate makes these pumps popular and useful.

These pumps work best for liquids with low viscosity like water, light oils etc. For low to mid level viscosity fluids the pump requires higher power. Impeller and casing are the two most important parts of the pump that help in conversion of energy. The rotating part of the pump is the impeller while surrounding airtight passage is the casing. When the fluid enters the casing and later falls on the impeller blade it gets whirled outwards towards the diffuser of the casing, this leads to increasing the pressure and velocity of the fluid.

Factors to consider when buying centrifugal pump:

  • Fluid viscosity: Used for mainly low viscosity fluids

  • Density and gravity of fluid: These factors affect the performance of the pump

  • Temperature and pressure: The use of a high pressure centrifugal water pump is suggested for high demand jobs, also considering the fluid temperature and conditions is needed when selecting the pump.

  • Cavitation: The formation of bubbles or cavities can lead to creating  low pressure around the impeller which can be damaging. Thus checking on the suction capacity is required.

  • Vapor pressure: The pressure can increase the temperature leading to evaporation, this can lead to dry running the motor and create wear and tear.

Type of centrifugal pumps:

Depending on the things like design, application, service etc these pumps can be classified under different groups. Pump can be classified into 3 groups depending upon the number of impellers present.

  • Single stage: This has one impeller pump making it a simple design which is easy to maintain. Useful for low pressure and high flow rate work.

  • Two stage: It has two side by side impellers used for mid to high pressure jobs.

  • Multistage centrifugal pumps: Best for high pressure fluid transfer, it has three or more impellers.

Depending on the shaft orientation the pumps can be classified as horizontal or vertical pumps. Horizontal multistage centrifugal pumps are a popular choice due to ease of maintenance.
