What Are Dosing Pumps

A positive displacement pump which is made to help inject a substance into flow of water, fluid, gas or steam. It provides a really precise flow for great control due to their small structure. These pumps are used in industries like food industry, water treatment, chemical industry, pharmaceutical, agriculture and mining. Another big sector where they are used in medical and hospitals.

Chemical dosing pumps are a widely used type of dosing pump. Some of the common applications seen by chemical dosing pumps is addition of chlorine through the dosing pump into water for killing bacteria or addition of chemicals into water tanks to neutralize the pH levels. Chemical dosing pumps are designed to withstand high temperatures and pressure.

Operation of dosing pumps:

The tank containing the fluid that needed to be dosed is injected with a chemical, which is drawn into its chamber as per the required dose by the dosing pump. These pumps are powered by an electric motor and have a controller to manage the powering on and off of the pump and flow rate. Few advanced models available have more sophisticated control systems.

Various types of dosing pumps:

Depending on the mechanism, application, pressure and the type of chemical being used the dosing pumps can be divided into 4 types

  • Diaphragm dosing pump (constant injection): The chamber is filled or emptied with help of valves, piston and diaphragm on both inlet and outlet pipe. A percentage of the flow rate equivalent to a specific amount of chemical is injected at a preset speed which is drawn in by the piston that is filling the chamber. Some models can also inject variable dosing rate.

  • Diaphragm dosing pump (pulse injection): Unlike constant injection diaphragm pump this pump injects the chemical in pulse with the help of a solenoid coil. The time length between pulses is the flow rate. It is simple in design and lower cost, but is less accurate when compared to a constant injection pump.

  • Lobe pumps: Suitable for high viscous fluids. These pumps let a certain amount of fluid flow through meshing gear impellers. These are not advisable to use for low flow rates. Due to viscous fluid that self lubricates the pumps it reduces the wear and tear.

  • Peristaltic pumps: A  highly accurate type of dosing pump. The most common uses include pumping IV fluids.
