Identifying The Need For Vertical Inline Pump

A centrifugal single stage pump that is designed to be installed vertically, for a smoother flow of fluid,s their suction and delivery are also inline. Due to their upright design, they take up less space than horizontal centrifugal pumps. The horizontal pump can take up 2 to 3 times more space than the vertical inline centrifugal pump. The inline centrifugal pumps are ideal for fluids with low viscosity. These pumps are commonly used for water supply, blast pumping, fire fighting and marine water pumping.

Types of vertical inline pump:

  • Close coupled vertical inline pumps: The pump is designed such that right at the end of the motor shaft the impeller is, while right above the face of the motor is the pump casing. These pumps can be used upto power of 50HP, making them high pressure vertical pumps. They are mainly used in commercial building plumbing applications.  Closed coupled vertical inline water pumps are the most cost effective vertical pumps.

  •  Rigid coupled vertical inline pump: These pumps have two shaft designs. The pump and motor shafts are put together with the help of rigid aluminum or steel coupling. The load generated by the impeller is taken upon by the motor bearing alone.

  • Flex coupled vertical inline pump: Unlike closed coupled and rigid coupled pumps, flex coupled pumps include the thrust bearing assembly as part of the pump itself.

Vertical multistage pumps:

Vertical multistage centrifugal pumps have two or more impellers. Most multistage pump impellers are mounted on the same shaft but in certain cases it may be mounted on different shafts. The passing of fluid at each stage increases the discharge pressure. When looking for high pressure, vertical multistage pumps are most effective.

Vertical multistage inline pumps are used in industrial, commercial use, medical work, domestic - high rise apartments, municipal water supply and agriculture. They are used more not only due to high flow rate but also because of abrasive solution capabilities and simple engineering design.

When to buy a vertical inline pump and not horizontal?

  • Space: the vertical pump takes much less space than the horizontal pump.

  • Net positive suction head: The NPSH is lower for vertical multistage inline pumps so the flow of fluid is much more smoother and easier.

  • Temperature: Vertical inline booster pump can handle high temperature and high pressure.

One must also understand the limitations though. The space taken by a vertical pump may be lesser but the headroom required is more. The center of gravity is high so balancing can be a problem for high pressure applications. The machines are also prone to mechanical seal issues.
